405XL fits thirteen printers: the WorkForce Pro WF-3800, WF-3820DWF, WF-3825DWF, WF-4800, WF-4820DWF, WF-4825DWF, WF-4830DTWF and WF-7835DTWF, plus the WorkForce WF-3830DWTF, WF-7310DTW, WF-7800, WF-7830 DTWF and WF-7840DTWF.

Three capacities of the same ink — standard, high and extra high. The catch is that 405XXL black does not fit every printer in the family. The WF-4820DWF, for instance, takes 405 and 405XL only. Buying XXL for a machine that will not accept it is an expensive mistake, so confirm your model before ordering the biggest size.

Yes, and the more you print the more sense it makes. The WorkForce Pro range is built for volume, so the gap between compatible and genuine prices compounds quickly. For letters, invoices and internal reports — which is most of what these machines produce — the output is indistinguishable.

Yes. There is no problem running a standard cartridge in one slot and an XL in another. It is a useful trick if your black empties faster than the colours, which in an office it almost always does.

Start with the chip. Take the cartridge out, wipe the copper contact with a dry lint-free cloth, and refit it until it clicks. If the message persists, switch the WF-4820DWF off at the mains for a minute so it re-reads all four slots on restart.
