502XL covers a small but well-used group of Epson machines — the XP-5100 desktop range and four WorkForce models built around the same cartridge. These are printers people tend to keep for years, and the ink is where the running cost sits.

One to watch: the XP-5100 uses 502XL and the XP-5200 uses 503XL. Same family, different cartridge. The number printed on the one you are removing is the reliable answer.

  • Epson 503XL ink cartridges — the number people most often confuse with 502XL. It fits the WorkForce WF-2960 and WorkForce WF-2960DWF, which will not accept 502XL.

502XL fits eight Epson printers: the WorkForce WF-2860DWF, WF-2865DWF, WF-2880DWF and WF-2885DWF, and the XP-5100, XP-5105, XP-5150 and XP-5155.

No. The XP-5100 generation takes 502XL and the XP-5200 generation takes 503XL. The printers look almost identical and sit side by side in the same family, which is exactly why this one causes trouble. Read the number off the cartridge you are replacing before ordering.

Only the capacity differs. Both fit the same eight printers. The XL holds more ink, so it costs less per page and needs changing less often. For very light use the standard 502 is fine, and you can mix the two across slots without issue.

Both numbers appear against some of these machines because Epson used different cartridge numbering in different regions. For a printer bought in the UK, go by the number printed on the cartridge currently in the machine. That is always the reliable guide.

Nearly always a chip contact problem. Remove the cartridge, wipe the copper strip with a dry lint-free cloth, and refit it firmly until you hear it seat. If the WF-2860DWF still will not take it, power down at the mains for a minute before trying again.
