There are 2 types of glossy coated paper, the most common type and cheaper option is cast coated paper. This is made from a china clay coating being pressed with a chrome plated heated roller on to the paper giving a smoother finish. These papers are only suitable for dye based inks due to the receiving coated layer.
Micro Porous as the name suggests is a paper coating made with PE coating which when on the paper has micro pores to capture the ink. These glossy photo papers are more expensive but can be used with pigment and dye based inks.
